Lt. Wayne Gross Killed in Vietnam

Second Lieutenant Wayne W. Gross, 27, of Carroll, was killed by sniper fire in Vietnam Monday, August 19, his parents were notified Wednesday night.

An only son of Mr. and Mrs. Ray Gross of Route 2, he met his death north of the City of Hue and south of the Demilitarized Zone in South Vietnam.

The parents were notified by U.S. Marine Corps officers at their home. No official notification has been received yet from the U.S. government.

Lt. Gross had been in Vietnam since July 6, and had been a member of the marine corps for about a year and a half. The corps had given him reserve status until he completed work toward his master's degree in farm economics at Iowa State University, Ames, last fall. He received his B.S. degree from St. Louis University, St. Louis, with a degree in biology.

He was a member of Mt. Carmel Parish and graduated in 1959 from Kuemper High School. He was married April 20, 1968, at Quantico, Va. to Leanne McFadden of Atlantic. She was just completing arrangements to open an apartment in Omaha, where she expected to teach school this year.

He was born June 28, 1941. His mother is the former Marcella Schettler. Also surviving besides his parents is his sister, Sr. Suzanne Gross, F.S.P.A., of LaCrosse, Wis. and his grandfather, William Gross of Carroll.
